This month, we’re spotlighting Broderick, our Software Engineer! Read on to learn more about how he spends his time outside of work, where he’d like to visit, and all about his first job.
Describe your experience before joining the Emergent Software team
Before joining the Emergent Software team, I worked as a software developer in a glass manufacturing facility. I started as an intern in college and was there for nearly 4 years, and I got to work with all sorts of interesting stuff. The work was really varied, and it was fun to piece together how everything connected and related to each other; seeing how one project fit in with all the other processes was always satisfying.
What drew you to join Emergent Software?
I was drawn to Emergent Software by a handful of things, but the emphasis on collaboration and learning from peers was probably the most significant. The variety of work that comes from working with different clients with different technologies is a challenge that I was very interested in. All Emergent Software’s accolades from various websites played a big part as well.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I like to keep things varied! If I have nothing going on, movies, video games, and hanging around the apartment with my cat are always a safe bet. My girlfriend and I like to spend time trying out new breweries and cooking fancy food. It’s expanded our horizons quite a bit: I know what an artichoke looks like now! I also play guitar and piano, and I’m sure my neighbors don’t appreciate it very much, but I’m getting better. I started boxing a little over a year ago, and plan to add rock climbing to my repertoire soon.
What was your first job?
My first job was working in my mom’s dental practice as a receptionist. My plan growing up was to work in medicine, and working there scratched that itch a little bit, even if that isn’t what I ended up pursuing. I also got to say “paging Doctor Mom” a whole lot, which made it all worth it!
Where in the world would you like to visit most?
I really want to visit Denmark! I’ve spent over a year learning Danish to prepare, but the fjords will have to wait for now... Iceland and Sweden are on my list as well.
Thanks for sharing your story with us and for being a fantastic addition to our team, Broderick! We’re lucky to have you. Stay tuned for future spotlights of the great people who make up Emergent Software!
